Moving Your Feet

 

Everyone needs inspiration to keep them moving forward. If you read my book, you know that music plays a big part in keeping me on track with me exercise. First of all it keeps me pumped up, which helps prevent my easily distracted brain from wandering off track and finding excuses to do anything but exercise.  But more importantly, the music is selected and organized based on the beat.

I used to start my power walks at about 3 1/2 mph and then gradually work them up to about 4 1/2 mph.  Today, because I am typically starting out in the 4 mph range and working up to 5 mph which I can sustain for 90 minutes without too much trouble. Thus, I have the music on my Zune laid out by the speed of the beat. 

Of course, if you do the math you see there is a lot more music than required for a 60-90 minute walk.  That's because I want options and the ability to skip songs as needed, so the Zune is way overloaded with stuff.

As you build your own custom choices, think of high energy stuff, not slow easy-listening stuff, as that can slow you down rather than challenge you to maintain a rapid pace.

Oh yeah, and if you are prone to singing with the music, remember that others can hear you, but not the music, which could be quite embarrassing if you have less than a stellar voice...
